Dear Birch
Families!
Many students
enjoyed participating in the Birch Reading Club last year and we are going to do it again
this year! If you were not here
last year or can’t remember the process, please keep reading!!
Each month students
will receive a sheet to keep track of their reading. This year each sheet will focus on a science topic. Please take the time to read the facts
to your child. Students need to
color in, check off, or X out a space for each time they read. Children need to read 5 times a
week. Kindergarteners need to be
read to at least 10 minutes a sitting.
First and second graders need to read at least 15 minutes. While third graders need to read at
least 20 minutes. You can
definitely use the teacher’s homework reading time in this amount. You can also read twice in one day over
the weekend to make up for a missed time.
If students read all of their time for the week, they will receive a
stamp or sticker on their chart.
They need to bring them in on Monday to get checked. They will then be returned on
Tuesday. (Don’t forget what you
read on Monday night and don’t lose your sheet!)
When the month is
over, students will turn their sheets in to their teachers and they will get a
reward if they read all of their time for the month. This may be a ribbon, pencil, or other special treat. Their name will be put on a bulletin
board at school, read during morning announcements, and included in the school
newsletter. If your child reads
above the minimum, they can record it on their paper where noted. They will be recognized for their extra
work!! A new sheet will be given
out for the next month. (I am
combining November and December together.)
I will be putting
reminders in the newsletter and making reminder announcements at school for
students to read and to turn in their sheets each week.
If there are any
questions, please email me at adurno@leeca.org. We are starting off easy and things may
be added later on in the year, so I will keep you informed as things change.
