In first grade, the
students created and solved number stories involving “units,” “sums,” and
“differences.”
A few samples are:

Unit: Pizza
Number Sentence: 13
+ 2 = 15
Story:
There were 13 pizzas
in a big box.
The pizza man
brought 2 more.
There were 15 pizzas
in all.
Jacob B.
Unit: Cookies
Number Senteance: 99
+ 2 = 101
Story:
I had 99 cookies.
Then my dad and mom
gave me 2 more.
So now I have 101
cookies.
Juliana:
Unit: Straws
Number Sentence: 5 +
10 = 15
Story:
I had 5 straws.
My dad gave me 10
more.
I have 15 altogether.
Jaheim:
Unit: Sisters
Number
Sentence: 2 – 1 = 1
Story:
Cinderella had 2
sisters.
1 went away and now
there is 1 left!
