District Statement March 11, 2020
March 11, 2020

Dear North Olmsted Community,

North Olmsted City Schools continues to monitor developments surrounding the coronavirus and the three confirmed cases in Cuyahoga County. To date, there are no confirmed cases associated with North Olmsted City Schools.

The health and safety of our students remains a primary concern. As new information becomes available about the coronavirus, we work to update our emergency response plans and increase preventative safety measures. As a proactive step, the district will be closed on March 17, 2020 for all students. This day will be a professional development day and allow district administrators and staff members to plan and prepare distance learning initiatives should the district have to close for a period of time. All after school and evening activities will still take place as scheduled on this day.

There have been several questions regarding student activities and field trips. At this time the district does not plan to cancel any field trips or student activities/events. Travel recommendations are constantly changing and the district will keep a close eye on those recommendations as field trips approach and communicate any changes that occur.

We would like to remind our families that students should stay home from school and events if they are sick. In addition, families and community members should not attend school functions and activities if they are feeling ill or fall into the high risk category.

On all health related matters, the district works closely with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, the Ohio Department of Health and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention. We stay up to date on the information and resources provided by these agencies and also follow their recommendations and guidelines to ensure a healthy school community.

The Ohio Department of Health has established a call center to answer any questions related to the coronavirus. The call center is available from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. seven days a week and can be reached at 1-833-4ASKODH (1-833-427-5634).

The district will continue to watch developments about the coronavirus and will take the appropriate steps necessary to protect our students, staff, and school community.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Zalar, Ph.D.
Superintendent
