District Statement - April 20, 2020

Dear North Olmsted Families,

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a huge impact across the State of Ohio and our North Olmsted community. We would like to provide some important information that will impact this school year as well as next school year.

Recommendation to postpone the closure of Spruce Primary and Redistricting

First, we would like to update you about the plans to close Spruce Primary School and redistrict our elementary boundary lines. We know the COVID-19 pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty and disruption to our families, staff members, and community. At this time, I am recommending that we postpone the closing of Spruce Primary and redistricting of the elementary schools next year. This will be discussed at the Special Board of Education Meeting that is scheduled for this Wednesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m. We encourage you to attend this meeting by visiting our district Facebook page (You do not need a Facebook account to watch the meeting.) While we still feel confident that the redistricting plan is best for students, we also recognize that the timing to implement this change is not ideal. Ultimately, we want our students, families, and staff, to have a proper transition when making such a big change.

Governor DeWine extends school closure

Secondly, today Governor Mike DeWine announced that all Ohio schools will remained closed for the remainder of the academic school year. We know this brings disappointment to our families and we share in that disappointment. When we were directed to close our school buildings in March, we did not realize it would be the last time we would see our students in person this school year. I know this announcement also prompts several questions on a variety of topics. What does this mean for you and your family?

NOCS will continue online/eLearning

North Olmsted will continue online/eLearning. Our goal is to keep learning expectations realistic and manageable for students and families. The focus during 4th Qtr. will be on essential learning standards of course/subject content and will be new grade level/course material. Complete information about online/eLearning resources can be found on the district website

Pickup of personal belongings

We will schedule dates and times for families to pick up any remaining materials and personal belongings that they left at school before our buildings were closed in mid-March. Once that information is finalized we will communicate that out to our families.

2020-2021 School Year

Governor DeWine touched on school resuming in the fall and what that might look like. The district is being proactive and is working to create contingency plans should the district need to make adjustments/changes for the fall.

Finally, I invite you to help us celebrate the Class of 2020. Tonight, we will be turning on the stadium lights (4/20/2020) at 8:20 p.m. (2020 military time) for 20 minutes and 20 seconds. The community is welcome to drive by the stadium and show your support for high school seniors. Please stay in your vehicle and remember that no gatherings will be permitted. We encourage you to turn on your porch/garage light at your home as well.

Please watch for further communication and check our website for updates at We are working hard to support our students and families as best we can.  We will get through this together. Please continue to stay safe, practice social distancing, and remain at home as much as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or comments.

Michael E. Zalar Ph.D.
