Community Forum - January 16, 2020

You are invited to attend a community input session regarding our district facilities. The community forum (special board meeting) will take place on January 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Pine Intermediate School. The meeting will be open to the public and attendees will be able to ask questions and provide feedback prior to the regular board of education meeting in January (date to be determined).

The North Olmsted Board of Education was presented with a formal recommendation regarding district facilities at the December 18th regular meeting. This recommendation was largely based on the work completed by the Community Task Force. Part of that recommendation included closing one elementary school and reconfiguring the District for the 2020-2021 school year.

Based on size and location it is recommended that Spruce Primary School be the building to close for the 2020-2021 school year. The new district reconfiguration would be as follows:

Birch Primary School – Grades K – 2

Forest Primary School – Grade K – 2

Chestnut Intermediate School becomes a Primary School – Grades PreK – 2

Pine Intermediate School – Grades 3 – 5

Maple Intermediate School – Grades 3 – 5

Current and the new proposed boundary maps can be found on the district website by clicking here.

The recommendation to close Spruce Primary School and redistrict our remaining schools allows the district to more effectively utilize classroom space at each building, reduce class sizes, and provide equitable support services for all students in grades PreK-5. In addition, closing a building would result in long term cost savings for the district. The recommendation to close Spruce Primary School is both educationally and fiscally responsible.

The Community Task Force, along with district administrators have been continuously working on the Facilities Master Plan Phase ll since February 2019. The district website contains several documents related to the work completed by the Community Task Force, the community survey that was conducted in the fall of 2019, and the formal recommendation made to the Board of Education. These documents can all be found on the homepage of the district website.

We look forward to seeing you on January 16th
