Class of 2020 Updates

Dear Class of 2020 Students and Families,

The Class of 2020 has been at the top of our minds since the start of the school closure. In recent days there has been a lot of new information coming out about graduations, end of the year events, and recommendations for the health and safety of students. We would like to provide a complete update that addresses many of these events as well as questions that you might have. When making these decisions we have spent a great deal of time gathering feedback from the class officers and parent committees, while also keeping in mind the recommended guidelines for social distancing and large gatherings of people.

Prom was originally scheduled for May 9th and rescheduled for June 26th. At this time, we have decided to cancel prom.  Due to the nature of the event, it is not possible to conduct a prom and still abide by the social distancing and large gathering guidelines.

Alternate plans: Students would like to conduct a “virtual prom” on the original date of May 9th. Students will be encouraged to share photos and videos dancing and dressed up on social media with the theme of “All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go”.

Senior AwardsThe scholarship deadline has been extended to May 1st. The award ceremony was originally scheduled for May 14th. Again due to social distancing and large gathering guidelines we will not be able to conduct an in person event.

Alternate plans: A virtual awards ceremony will be conducted via Facebook Live on the North Olmsted City School’s Facebook page (NOCSEagles) on May 14th at 7:00 p.m. During this event we will announce the names of all award winners and also recognize the top scholars. This video will remain on Facebook for anyone that cannot watch at the scheduled time of the livestream. Scholarship checks will be mailed to the student’s home. (Note: You do not need a Facebook account to view the live event.)

BaccalaureateThis event was regularly scheduled for May 27th. Again due to social distancing and large gathering guidelines we will not be able to conduct an in person event.

Alternate Plans: This event will be conducted virtually. A video will be created that will be posted on our district website as well as the district Facebook and Twitter pages (@NCOSEagles). The video will include recorded speeches of our speakers.

CommencementThe Ohio Department of Education recently released guidelines to all schools in Ohio recommending that districts move to a virtual ceremony. In addition, this guidance suggests that the virtual ceremonies be held close to the originally scheduled date. Earlier this week, Governor Mike DeWine encouraged districts to utilize a virtual ceremony for commencement.

Alternate Plans: We will follow a traditional graduation ceremony format. Each part will be recorded and put together into a final Class of 2020 graduation video. Starting May 18th and going through May 21st we will provide individual opportunities for students to have their name read and be able to walk across the stage with their family present. The Class of 2020 will be broken up alphabetically. Each student will receive a scheduled time to arrive to the performing arts center.  Each student will be permitted to bring four guests with them. The students will be able to walk into the performing arts center with pomp and circumstance playing. Specific information about your students’ scheduled time will be communicated in the coming weeks.

A photographer will be present to take official graduation photos in front of a Class of 2020 backdrop. Additional parts of the ceremony such as student speakers and choir performances will also be included in the video. Every student will receive a free dvd copy of the entire ceremony. The video will also be shared on our district website and social media. We are also planning to hold a Class of 2020 celebration/viewing of the finished video at the Aut-O-Rama Drive in Theatre located on Lorain Road in North Ridgeville. A final date (early June) will be communicated once the theatre receives permission from the health department.

Last Day District Bus Tour and FestivitiesTo celebrate the Class of 2020 we will have a “Parade of Seniors” on May 22nd at 1:00 p.m. The parade will begin at the main high school entrance and students will drive around the school and stadium and out the middle school entrance. There will be a limit of one vehicle per graduate. We encourage students to decorate their vehicles and have family members in the car with them.

Social Media ActivitiesWe have also planned a variety of social media activities for the Class of 2020. 4/27-5/3: Decorate Your Door/Window Challenge 5/4-5/10: Teacher Appreciation, Virtual Prom5/11-5/17: Decorate Your Cap and Submit Photo5/18-5/24: Kindergarten to Senior Year Photo Challenge5/25-5/31: Senior Farewells (short video to say your goodbyes to HS)Making these decisions and alternatives plans was not done easily or lightly. Each week we have conversations of how we can recognize the Class of 2020 in a meaningful but safe way. Our students have worked hard and we want to celebrate their accomplishments and bring closure to their time here at North Olmsted High School. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
