Online/eLearning Plans April 20, 2020 through June 3, 20202
Important Information about 4th Qtr. Online/eLearning
Our goal is to keep learning expectations realistic and manageable for students and families. The focus during 4th Qtr. will be on essential learning standards of course/subject content and will be new grade level/course material.
1. Students will be expected, to the best of their ability, to engage in Online/eLearning and complete learning assignments and activities.
2. Students in grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 (not PreK) will access assignments through Google Classroom, which can be accessed through the district’s Clever Portal.
3. In grades K-2 and 3 – 5, there will be a Specials Google Classroom for each school where students can access learning activities in Art, Music, and Physical Education.
4. We will assess student learning through providing feedback on student’s completed work, rather than typical grading practices.
5. Students will be graded using a Pass (P*) / Incomplete (I*) method based on the student's completion of assignments.
Additional information on each of these items is provided below.
Accessing Student Learning through Google Classroom
Students will access learning through their teachers’ virtual classroom using Google Classroom. Throughout 4th quarter, all teachers will use Google Classroom to post learning content, assignments, instructional videos, and access to Google Meet.
All students in grades K – 12 (not PreK) in the district have login credentials (username and password) for Google Classroom. These credentials were emailed from
donotreply@nolmsted.org to families on March 16 or 17, 2020. Students have been using their login credentials into the Clever Portal, which contains Google Classroom. If your child needs their login credentials, contact your child’s teacher or nocshelp@nolmsted.org.
Below is helpful information to familiarize yourself with Google Classroom and Google Meet:
Google Classroom is for teacher/student interaction. If you have questions or comments as a parent, please email your child’s teacher.
Expectations for Student Learning/Work Load
In Google Classroom, teacher’s will be posting instructions, assignments and learning materials for the week each Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. Assignments will be posted for the week. New learning will be focused on essential learning standards and outcomes for each grade level/ course content area. Again, district goals for student learning is to keep student workloads and learning expectations reasonable and manageable.
In addition, our special education students and families will also receive communication from their child's Intervention Specialist.
We recognize that student learning needs are different and the pace at which students work is different. If at any point you have questions about student workload, or work is becoming difficult to manage, please contact your child’s teacher and principal. Please communicate with your child’s teacher or principal using email or you may also leave voicemail messages with your child’s principal.
Grading for 4th Quarter
As mentioned, Online/eLearning presents challenges to learning that are different from actually being face to face with students in the classroom with students. The Online/eLearning experience is new both for our students and our teachers. With these factors in mind, how we approach student learning and assessing student learning must also be different and not the same as a typical school setting.
We believe that the Online/eLearning circumstances should not have a negative impact on student grades. Students will be given descriptive feedback on learning assignments. Overall, students will be graded in 4th Qtr. using Pass (P*) or Incomplete (I*) based on students’ completion of work.
Under the current COVID-19 school closure Online/eLearning circumstances, this approach to grading is highly recommended rather than using traditional grades. Both locally and at the Collegiate level, similar methods have been adopted in place of traditional grades.
- To Pass (P*) for the 4th quarter, students will be expected to participate in Online/eLearning and complete assignments. Individual grades will not be issued for assignments. Teachers will provide descriptive feedback to students on assignments.
- No final exams for 2nd semester will be given for high school courses. The 2nd semester grade will be based on the 3rd and 4th quarters.
- More details and specifics about grading for 4th quarter and determining final grades for the semester will be provided to families the week of April 20, 2020.
- Information/details on 4th quarter and semester two grades can be found
